weekly highlights

Weekly Highlights is a new feature here at A Daydreamer’s Thoughts and will be a post highlighting things that happened on and off the blog. It is inspired by The Story Sirens In My Mailbox, Books, Biscuit and Tea’s Showcase Sunday, Kimba Caffeinated’s Sunday Post, and the British Letterbox Love.

In the feature I won’t mention everything I received, nor every post I wrote during the week but will simply feature a selection of things I wish to spotlight a second time around.

Post Highlights

I posted three reviews this week;
Outside by Shalini Boland (FOUR HEARTS)
The Clearing by Shalini Boland (FOUR HEARTS)
Looking For Alaska by John Green (FOUR HEARTS)

I got a new skin! Did you notice? ;) Got any comments or find any errors, let me know here

My Thursdays Special Spotlight this week was My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent, check out why I think you should read it here

For Behind the Blog this week I spoke about libraries and how much they have meant to me as I grew up. To find out exactly why I love libraries, and to tell me why you do, check out my post here

Yesterday I participated in the Book Blogger Love-a-thon and posted quite a few different things, to see the array of posts I wrote, feel free to click here

Blogger Spotlight

My wonderful blogger spotlight Michelle wrote a really great post on British Authors for the blog this week. You can check out five of her favourite authors and information on books they have coming out this week by simply clicking here

Around the Blogosphere

Emily wrote a really interesting post this week on DNFing books, click here to read her thoughts and add your own!

Raimy admitted to being a book hoarder and being terrible at keeping on top of her Kindle books. I am the same way and found the post interesting to read, check it out here and see if it’s the same for you.

Knowing which book to read next can be a daunting task. This week Gaby has spoken all about trying to decide what to read by genre but then, how do you place books in genres? This is a great post that I really think you should go and check it out here

Ever wonder about the way phones affect our lives? Hop on over to this AMAZING post by Book Rock Betty to get an idea. I really loved this post, just fyi!

Letterbox Love

This week I only got one piece of mail but what a piece of mail it was! I was forunate enough to win a goody bag from Hooked on Books and just look at all the cool things I got!

I got a tote bag, four bookmarks, three posters, two ARCs, a make-up bag, a nail file, and some lip balm! Looking forward to using and reading it all :D Thank you so much to Bloomsbury for this giveaway!

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon; Mini-Challenge #4!

Posted on 23 February, 2013 by Faye - 15 Comments

Don’t worry, I haven’t suddenly lost my mind by skipping from #2 to #4. Instead, I decided not to participate in the third mini-challenge because playlists are just NOT my thing at all. For this challenge, I am writing a letter to my old blogger self. I’m not really sure how this is going to go but it’d be interesting to see where it goes.

Dear Past Faye

I see you sitting there, on your bed, with your mind full of ideas and inspiration, with your keys fumbling over the keyboard as you write your very first review to post on your blog. You’re thinking it out, working hard on it to make it unique and different, entertaining and fun, but I just want to tell you to stress a little less because that first review will be the one you’ll hate the most. As much as it seems like an amazing review today – and hey, it probably is still a great review, don’t take me the wrong way! – but it will not be anywhere near as good as your reviews once you get your own unique style flowing. These first reviews you write will be your pencil lines before the pen and paint arrives. It’s important, incredibly so, but soon it will no longer be seen.

While you may think that you’ll only be having this blog for a side hobby, something to do to help you get a better portfolio for work, and to share your love of writing, books, and films, I just want to warn you now that it will quickly become something so much more than that. You’ll find that your blog will always be on your mind but you also won’t mind because it will mean so much to you. It’ll be that small salvation to your jumbled up life that you never even knew you needed until it was just there. Suddenly, it’ll be the thought of NOT having a blog anymore that will cause your heart to ache and your breathing to become heavy, and you’ll know that you will be blogging for many years to come.

But don’t think it’s always going to be a walk in the park. It’s going to get hard along the way. There will be battles you’ll have to overcome, real life that will get in the way, and stress that you just can’t stop but feeling will occur but I just have to let you know that it will all be worth it. It may seem like it’s time to chuck in the towel some times but I promise that if you hold it altogether and just push through it, the rewards on the other side will be absolutely amazing and you really will soon be looking back in happiness because you did it. You stuck with it and you’re so much better off because of that.

Also, you may think that as soon as you hit “publish”, you will be entering a world of worry and lonliness, and you won’t have a clue where to reach out to get people to follow you or how to really communicate with other bloggers but with the help of some amazing friends – they will be friends soon – the journey will be made ten times better. You’ll learn all about Goodreads – a site you’ll wish you knew about growing up – you’ll get better at HTML, you’ll make a lot of graphics – and you’ll soon learn about the amazing Windows Live Writer as well.

What I’m really trying to say is that when you do finally get that first post out there and start marketing your blog, it’ll be the best decision you ever make and you will never forget it.
Trust Me.

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon; Interview Swap!

Posted on 23 February, 2013 by Faye - 7 Comments

Hey Guys!
So today, for 24 hours only, it is the Book Blogger Love-a-thon! It is a day to share book blogger love across the blogosphere in a variety of ways! To begin this wild and fun day, I have for you an Interview Swap with fellow blogger Claie @ Project to be Read! We both chose four questions each and then answered all eight for each other. So hop on over to Claie’s blog now for my answers, or continue scrolling to see Claire’s!

Bookish Questions

Do you have a favourite genre to read? If so, what is it? If not, what are your top three?
A favourite??? Just one??? I love anything with a paranormal element to it, whether it’s YA or adult. I’m also a big fan of urban fantasy (although it’s been a while since I read any) and cozy mysteries :)

Are there any books/genres that you feel you will never read?
I’m pretty flexible with what I read so I don’t really want to rule anything out. That said I won’t read anything that is judgemental or prejudiced against anyone. I’m very much about equality and personal freedom so any kind of “x is wrong” type statement tends to drive me up the wall.

What are your top five books and why?

  • Right now The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead is top of my list. It was an awesome read and it has Adrian Ivashkov!! I prefer the Bloodlines series to Vampire Academy so I’m really happy to see each book surpass the last.
  • Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read and is a really unique take on werewolves. I also love that it’s a true love story as opposed to a falling in love story as there is no distracting relationship drama.
  • Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh combines the best parts of paranormal romance and urban fantasy, providing a swoonworthy romance alongside some impressive and complex world building.
  • Book of Shadows by Cate Tiernan is not only an excellent start to a great series, but also the book that moved me from being a reader to being a reader. Since then I’ve read more and more, and I still usually reread the series at least once a year.
  • Last but not least is Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder which was my gateway book to fantasy. She managed to take a genre I had zero interest in and make it a passion, all in one book :)
If you could live in the world of any book or series (as yourself), which would you pick?
I think I’d like to live in the world of The Hollows by Kim Harrison. Paranormals are out of the closet after an epidemic so the world is full of witches, vampires, werewolves, pixies and demons. It would be a really fun world to live in, close enough to our own to feel normal but different enough to be interesting.

Bloggish Questions

Name five bloggers who inspire you or who you just love.
Vicky @ Books, Biscuits and Tea
Jenni @ Jenni Elyse
Mist @ Bookaholics Book Club
Faye @ A Daydreamer’s Thoughts
Angela @ Reading Angel

Blogging can get tough, what makes you look past that to continue blogging?
Remembering all the highlights of blogging – the first review book I was offered, the first comment on my blog, my first readathon and twitter chat. Then I make myself a huge cup of tea and spend some time looking back through my old posts and catching up on my favourite blogs to recapture my inspiration.

What do you love most about blogging?
Definitely the community :) Other bloggers are generally really supportive and chatting with other bloggers means you can talk about pretty much anything. I’ve lost track of the amount of blogging tips and tricks and book recommendations I’ve gotten.

If you could travel back in time to when you started your blog, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
Schedule! It took me ages to figure out that I could schedule blog posts in advance, but realistically there will be days where you aren’t able to blog or just don’t want to so scheduling can really help. My blog has ended up with some gaps in posting due to ill health so I really wish I’d gotten into the habit of scheduling earlier to have prevented that.

Thank you so much for answering all the questions Claire! It was so much fun to work with you on this! If you want to see my answers, head over to Claire’s blog by simply clicking here

I also apologise to my followers, today will be a “many posts” in one day kind of day!

Blogger Love-A-Thon – Love Letter!

Posted on 18 February, 2012 by Faye - 5 Comments

“we all have our stories to tell. whether we whisper or yell.”
- he is we, Happily Ever After
So, the point behind this post is to send a love letter to the bloggers that I love. This didn’t have to be specific but because there are a few bloggers out there who really, really, pull at my heartstrings and I missed the other mini-challenges, I thought I would mention them here.
I will also be doing a more specific note to everyone at the end, so don’t despair, I’ll mention you, I promise! :D
(can you guess who’ll be first? She’s been mentioned once today already.)
(are you there yet? is she? Oh, ooops… yeah, it’s a she… )
(getting closer… i’ve known her for years…)
YES! You are CORRECT! My first letter goes out to Brodie over at Eleusinian Mysteries.
Brodie! I love you! I tell you this a lot of the time because, well, it’s true! I wouldn’t even have a blog if it wasn’t for you persuading me to get one and then your continued support throughout it all has just been… amazing! At every step I take, you’re there, cheering me on and it fills me with such pride. I am so glad that this blog and blogging in general has pulled us closer again and I love chatting with you over twitter and gushing over new books. At first it was you fully educating me on new books, but I think I’m showing you new books (and films) now as well and that really fills me with some sort of pride. Honestly girl, I would be nowhere without you, so THANK YOU <3

(my second lover is someone close to my heart too)
(but she’s a new addition to my heart, but none-the-less someone i’ve grown so fond of)
(in fact, her comments are some of the ones I love the most.)
SARAH over at Sazbah101! There is a reason you are my Blogger Spotlight this month!

Sarah! Saz! Nitwit! (:p)You are honestly an amazing person and I am so so so glad that you listened to Brodie and stumbled onto my blog. You have become an addition to my blog and comments that I would miss if you were to ever disappear. I love talking to you on twitter and reading your comments and I love your blog and reading your reviews! I just love you. Your enthusiasm for life is so amazing and you never fail to bring a huge smile to my face, even when I’m stressed to the max you somehow manage to just turn it all around and I could not be happier because of it! Honestly child, how do you do it? Haha. Anyway, yes, I just want to say THANK YOU for everything you’ve done for me in the past MONTH. <3

(third person is such a lovely girl)
(she is always answering my tweets and helping me when I need)
(her blog is wonderful but needs some love!)
So if you are looking for a new blogger to stalk *cough* I mean follow, go check out lucy over at ChooseYA

Lucy! Boy am I glad that you added me on Goodreads! You’ve become someone that I love talking to and reading your thoughts about books! I appreciate all of your thoughts and comments and just love you :D You always get some great books and give me insight on some really good ones to keep an eye out for and because we’re both from the UK, it’s nice that our timezones make it easier to stay in contact! I hope that you continue to stick around so that I can get to know you better! I want to say THANK YOU for being my friend and awesome and lovely fellow book-blogger! :D

(Onto the fourth shout-out! This one is someone I need to get to know better)
(I feel I should share the comment love)
(but i’m always so busy, here’s hoping this will change soon!)
I am talking about Theta over at Resolution Corner!

Theta! You’ve been a constant commenter on my blog for a while now and I just wanted to send you a “letter” to let you know how much I truly appreciate it! I don’t always have the time to reply or to comment on your blog but I do check it out and I love all that you post and I love when you comment on here. I will try and keep it going on yours but yes, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for being such a loyal and lovely follower! And if you ever want to chat and get to know me better, feel free to hook me up on twitter, facebook or via e-mail! I’d always be happy to hear from you! :)

(There’s just one more personal shout-out to go.)
(this one is a new love… or a growing love… or something like that)
(it has a lot to do with this event, or maybe I’m just in an awesome mood)
but finally, I’m writing a letter to Katelyn  from Kate’s Tales of Books and Bands!

Kate! So, I have been getting your reviews to my inbox for a while now and I have to say that I always read your reviews but very rarely have the time to comment. (I also usually view on my ipod which is really difficult to reply on, anyway!) But, this is not what this letter is about! This letter is to say THANK YOU for hosting this event. It is possibly the most inspired event I’ve participated in and I loved seeing all the new blogs and getting and replying and giving comments all day and I know that this is completely down to you so yes, thank you! I will continue to stalk your blog after this, and maybe I’ll even find the time to comment some more! :D

(And this letter here is for everyone else! So all of you!)
(You are just as special to me as all of these guys *points above* I promise!)
(But I either haven’t met you properly yet or don’t know you well enough yet)
or I’m so tired, I simply missed you. But don’t despair, because this is for YOU my FOLLOWERS.

YOU! You have no idea just how grateful I am that you are here reading this. I want you to know right now that I love YOU. I love everything about you. I love that you’re taking the time to read this, even if you don’t comment! You make blogging worthwhile, you make it fun and interesting and you make me want to come back and do it again, day in, day out. It is because of you that I am sticking with this when normally I let projects like this fall to the wayside. If you knew me at all, you’d know that I have a slight case of ADD and sticking to one task or project for a long time is usually incredibly difficult for me (hence why I never want to work in an office!) so the fact that I’m still here and have plans to stay here is incredible and it is down to you! So, pat yourself on the back, smile, and please, say hello! Add me on twitter, facebook and talk to me! E-mail me! Anything! I want to hear from you, I want to get to know you better! :D

i love all you guys <3

Blogger Love-A-Thon – More on Me!

Posted on 17 February, 2012 by Faye - 17 Comments

I warned you about this a while back, but throughout the day today (sparingly because I had work and university work to do!) I have been participating in this event which consists of commenting on others blog and just spreading love to other bloggers. Many of whom deserve so much love! I am linking here the schedule post from Katelyn’s blog which has a list of all the participating blogs. Go check them out! :-)
Welcome to the Book Blogger Love-A-Thon!
Now that we are sitting at 6pm (EST), it is time to participate in the 3rd mini-challenge! It is time to tell you all of the tale of my blogging experience thus far.
Well… five months and two days ago, I was sitting in my bedroom after having just watched One Day at the cinema after recently finishing the book. I was stunned by how much I loved the film and the book and how well they worked together. I wanted to tell people just how good it all was.
I had previously been toying with the idea of creating a blog. I am a university student and I study film and television and so I naturally love both forms of media and have always wanted some outlet to review films and television, never would it have crossed my mind to include books as well. Eventually I decided that I simply didn’t have the time to start a blog, and I definitely didn’t have enough material! (I also have very little faith in the quality of my reviews but that’s another story altogether!)
So, I was sitting in my room after watching a brilliant adaptation when it finally came to me, what about a blog that deals solely with adaptions? I could comment on the differences between the book and the film, what made it good, what made it bad, etc. It would be something new and different to add to the blogging world. So, naturally, I created that first review, a joint review of One Day (HERE).
The first thing I did after that was tell my longest OL friend, and fellow book-blogger, Brodie at Eleusianian Mysteries. She was my first follower and my first comment. From there… well, I don’t even KNOW what happened. I’m not sure where my followers came from, I don’t remember how I advertised my blog or how people came to follow me either! All I know is a month down the line, I was sitting with twenty or so followers and gaping at them all with mystery.
I also realised that my content changed. I only wrote two adaptation reviews, and then I was just writing regular movie reviews with regular book reviews. I took recommendations from fellow book bloggers (and followers) and got books out of the library which I sat down, read and then reviewed. Then, I did my first IMM (In My Mailbox) and my follower count continued to grow. Then I joined Goodreads and found an outlet to advertise my blog while also interacting and helping out authors with reviews.
Then I was getting e-mails, my follower count was steadily increasing, then I found out about netgalley, and then I was e-mailing publishers and still people were following and commenting on my posts more. I have had two giveaways for reaching two milestones, 50 and 100 followers and I still, to this day, don’t understand where everyone came from. I marvel at every new follower, I squee at every blog post, and I jump with glee when I get a book request accepted or simply have a book arrive that I bought.
It was brilliant. It is brilliant.
But it’s also hard-work. I knew it would be. I had been forewarned and still I put in more hours to my blog then anything I have ever done. What started out as a small project has turned into something so much more. This blog is, in a corny and silly way, my saviour. When I have had a bad day, I check my e-mails and usually find someone has commented or followed and a smile flashes on my face, then a grin, and sometimes even a laugh!
It may be hard and time consuming, but I stick with it because the rewards are amazing. I love every aspect of blogging. Coming up with new and creative ideas, interacting with other bloggers, getting comments, posting comments, reading books, reviewing them, watching films, reviewing them… everything. I love it all and I wouldn’t give it up for the world!
The blogging community is one that has filled me with such happiness, I just don’t know if I could have survived the last few months without it. I’ve been through a lot lately, with burglary issues, self-esteem issues, motivation issues and just stress after stress after stress and it has been this blog and all of the wonderful people in the community that has helped to keep me on my feet. Because of them I didn’t float out to sea, I kept my head above water and now things are starting to settle again and life is beginning to flow as it should. The blogging community means the world to me.
Hey, that means you <3

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon

Posted on 2 February, 2012 by Faye - 2 Comments

Valentine’s Day is one of those annoying commercialised holiday’s that pops up to remind all those single people what they don’t have and all the couples how lucky (or unlucky if the case may be) they may be to have their significant other. I, for one, have never really celebrated the holiday, preferring instead to just treat it the same as every other day but then, I’ve also never been in a relationship on Valentine’s Day so never had any reason to do anything special. This year, however, everything is going to change. (Don’t get me wrong, I will be spending it alone again, but I will be doing something instead of ignoring it). This year, Katelyn at Kate’s Tales of Books and Bands, is hosting a Book Blogger Love-A-Thon and I am going to participate in it because if there is one thing I love, it is my fellow book bloggers!
The aim of this is for bloggers to spread love to fellow bloggers for an entire day! That day is February 17th! It will be a day devoted to commenting on other blogs, following new blogs and tweeters and facebook pages and just declaring love for all of the bloggers that you love and enjoy.
This is something that I am looking forward to doing. I generally try to comment as much as I can and I love telling fellow bloggers how much I love their blogs (you know, if I do! Flattery just for the sake of flattery isn’t something I’m good at, sorry!) because, I for one, know how good I feel when someone compliments me on my blog or my posts, or well, even if I just get a comment on any posts I do!
If you’d like to hear more about this, or would like to sign up, just click here.
