My Thoughts On… The Fear by C. L. Taylor

Hello All!
Today is my stop on the The Fear blog tour and I am here today with my review of this amazing book!

About the Book

When Lou Wandsworth ran away to France with her teacher Mike Hughes, she thought he was the love of her life. But Mike wasn’t what he seemed and he left her life in pieces.

Now 32, Lou discovers that he is involved with teenager Chloe Meadows. Determined to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself, she returns home to confront him for the damage he’s caused.

But Mike is a predator of the worst kind, and as Lou tries to bring him to justice, it’s clear that she could once again become his prey…

My Thoughts

C. L. Taylor never ceases to amaze me. Her books don’t just suck you in, or keep you on the edge of your seat, but they make you feel what the protagonist feels. They invoke fear, anxiety, horror and pain just with a few words and sentences strung together. It is incredible really, when you think of it like that. But honestly, C. L. Taylor is a truly talented author who deserves to be read time and time again. She is a strong writer who has a fantastic and awe-inspiring imagination. Her books make you think in ways you may not have thought before and they make you wonder about the world too. Of course, as they are all thriller’s too, she also brings about an intensity that keeps your heart racing throughout too. She is a master of cliff-hanger chapters and moments. Fortunately, this is all true of The Fear too which I very much loved and absolutely struggled to put down.

In reality, if it wasn’t for a bad attention span, bad joints and life getting in the way, I am positive that this would have been a book that I read in one sitting. As it is, reality stepped in a little and it did take me a few days to get through but not for lack of trying on my part! The Fear has a very unsettling topic at it’s heart. A topic which has been written about a few times before; grooming. In itself, grooming is already horrific to think about. But in this book, it is truly brought out with strings coming from all over the place about how many lives get affected by the act that one person does. I was instantly hooked onto this book and flipped through the chapters quickly, curiosity constantly getting the better of me as C. L. Taylor jumped from one perspective to the next. The best thing is that nothing is ever truly straight forward in her books and it’s also interesting to see how that forms the plot. Needless to say, the plot of this book was incredibly well written and came to a fantastic conclusion in the end, making the entire book worth reading.

Along with intricate and interesting plotlines, C. L. Taylor also manages to create truly unique characters who make her books that much more entertaining. In The Fear we have Louise who has been ruined by her past but doesn’t want to let it rule her anymore. She is both strong and weak at the same time and it was fascinating reading about her thoughts and actions, trying to understand where her head was. Then you had Chloe and everything going on with her and her life, how it was affecting her. And Wendy was an interesting character as well. All the characters in the book bring something to the plot but while that is the truth, they also have their own timelines and journeys through which they travel too, making them seem more intriguing to read. The first part of the book definitely has you wondering how all the characters connect and where it will all eventually lead.

The Fear is a strong thriller, which was always to be expected with C. L. Taylor. It is full of character development and a fascinating story that brings everything together in a climatic finale. It is a book that makes you feel a million emotions throughout and one that also makes you think. It is a heart-racing, addictive and fast-paced read that I definitely do not think that you will regret reading. And, if you haven’t already read any of her previous books, well… make sure you rectify that straight away too!
