My Thoughts On… The Secret Deep by Lindsay Galvin

Hi All!
Today is my stop on the blog tour for The Secret Deep and I am here today with a review of this fantastic book!

About the Book

When Aster wakes alone on a tropical island, she has no idea what has happened, why she is there, or where to find her younger sister, Poppy. Meanwhile Sam, who once met the sisters on a plane, makes links between the mystery of their disappearance and suspicious happenings in his own life. In a stunning dual narrative, the truth unravels with devastating effect – and the answer lies in the secret underwater world surrounding the desert island, populated by the beautiful and the impossible …

My Thoughts

As soon as I heard about this book, I simply had to read it. It sounded unique and interesting and fortunately, it definitely was. Lindsay Galvin pulls you straight in to the story with the introduction of Aster, Poppy and Sam. I instantly connected with Aster and absolutely adored Poppy. The story follows Aster and Poppy being relocated from the UK to New Zealand after the death of their mother. Both sisters are struggling with their grief in different ways and I really appreciated this part of the book. I also love how well Lindsay Galvin presented Aster’s anxiety issues in the book as well and how everyone around her helps her get through it.

Not going to lie, this book blew me away. I didn’t really know what to expect but it wasn’t what happened but I truly loved it! It was such a unique and interesting concept and I urge you to pick this up and read it so you know exactly what I mean. I have no idea if it’s something that can actually happen as I am not a scientist but who cares, the book was brilliant as it was.

I truly adored how much Aster loved her sister. I loved how much she protected her and every thought was about her. I loved that she never truly gave up on her. That familial bond was so lovely to read about and really kept me turning the page. The mystery of this book was addictive and how it connected to the sisters was just so interesting. I was on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next and how it would all tie together at the end. I am very pleased to report that I very much loved the ending – it was well worth the suspense throughout the rest of the book.

The only downside, and it is a small one, is that I struggled a little bit with Sam’s character and his motivation. In my opinion it seemed a little odd that he met the girls for less than a few hours and then searched for them so intently afterwards. I think he had a very fleshed out character and I felt for him a lot, especially because of his Granda but I just needed a little something more for his motivation. Even just a further scene of the characters connecting perhaps.

But as you can see, overall this book is definitely one that I would highly recommend. It’s one that has stuck with me for days since finishing as well and one that I just really, really want you all to read because it is so different and unique!
