Summary:
It’s not every day that a vampire borrows your pencil. When was the last time you sat next to a werewolf in maths?
Meet Trixie Grimble, the newest pupil at Monstacademy. Unfortunately, in a school filled with monsters, she’s the only ordinary girl and when she’s asked to help prepare for the annual Halloween parade, everything starts to go wrong.
Oh, and she’s also been kicked out of her bedroom to make room for a cat circus.
My Thoughts
This book was such a lovely read. It was full of humour, fun adventures, intrigue and mystery too! It is one that I am absolutely positive that most children will absolutely lap up and will be begging for more – I know I am! As this was quite a short book, it was easy to read it in one sitting – as an adult anyway! It had lovely short chapters which is perfect for the age range as well and it also included a small selection of illustrations as well which really brought the story to life. It was a brilliant read that I very much enjoyed and cannot wait to continue reading this series.
The main character Trixie was such a fascinating character. She starts off a little mousey and shy, but soon falls into her stride when she finally makes some friends in this odd school for the different. I loved the booming friendship in this book, it is so lovely to read. The three characters are so different but they just accept their differences about each other and still support and trust each other. They work together to save the day and I can definitely see that they’re going to be a wonderful trio to read about as the books continue.
What was absolutely brilliant about this book, however, was how Matt Beighton brought up some really important topics in such a funny and subtle way too. He talks a lot about how Trixie is not like the other people in her school and how this affects her. This is set on the backdrop of the characters all being supernatural but can easily be brought into this world and teach children who are different that it does not matter in the slightest. As long as you have friends by your side, you can conquer anything. The book also touched upon bullying too. It was just such a fabulous read. I keep thinking about it even though I’ve already finished it!
So, if you’re looking for a book to read this Halloween with your child – or if your child is looking for something fun to read alone – I highly recommend getting them this book. It will make them smile for sure and who knows… maybe they won’t be quite so scared of the Boogey Man under their bed after reading it… well… it could happen…
