World Book Day Celebration: The Books That Shaped my Childhood Years
Hi All!
Today I am sharing with you all the books that shaped my childhood years as part of a celebration of world book day along with a selection of other UKYA bloggers!
We’re all posting every half an hour throughout the day. So after you’ve checked out my post, definitely go and check out Vicky’s post which went live half an hour go.
Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman
Malorie Blackman is an author that absolutely shaped who I am today. I fell in love with Noughts and Crosses which was not just an incredible read but also taught me empathy and understanding as well. I then continue to read as many of her books as I possible could.
Ally’s World: The Past, The Present and This Loud, Loud Girl by Karen McCombie
As an avid reader from a young age, I really enjoyed the Ally’s World series. I remember reading it at the same time that my sister was reading Louise Rennison’s series and felt like we were reading similar books despite being different ages. Which was a nice memory for me.
Northern Lights by Philip Pullman
I think the best thing about Northern Lights is that while it is an epic fantasy that really pulls on the emotions, it’s a really complicated book that made me feel very smart while I was reading it as a younger child. I think these kind of books are so important for the avid reader like myself.
The Illustrated Mum by Jacqueline Wilson
I cannot put into words how much Jacqueline Wilson meant to me growing up. These were my favourite books. I loved each and every story that I read and loved recieving new books of hers. She was one of the authors that I will forever be grateful for as she truly made me fall in love with reading.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J. K. Rowling
Lastly, but certainly not least, we have the Harry Potter series. Not only did I fall in love with these books but the Harry Potter fandom as well. I grew up writing fanfiction, roleplaying with fellow fans and forming incredible friendships as well. These were the books that truly sparked my creativity. I owe them a lot.

truly i think the illustrated mum is the first book that introduced tattoos to me and i was obsessed with how amazing they’d be (i say now having 4!)

At 10/11, Northern Lights was a pretty significant book and series for me too. In fact, I’m pretty certain it is what spurred my love of fantasy. It was a favourite of mine back then and it’s still a favourite now!

I’m the same with Harry Potter. I genuinely think I’d be a different person if not for finding my love for reading via HP!
