With power comes enemies. Lots of them.
Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies.
He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.
Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too.
With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust…
When There
When I first started Spirit, I already knew that I loved Brigid Kemmerer’s style of writing. I was already hooked on the series and I was already in love with the characters. What I didn’t know was that I would fall even further in love with it all. It’s incredibly hard to explain but Brigid has a way of not just pulling you into each and every story in different ways, but she also makes you fall in love with every single character she writes about. In the books previous to this one, I never gave Hunter much thought. He was just a side character, not someone I really thought about or particularly liked all that much. Having now read Spirit, I can say with absolute certainty that I think he is an incredibly strong and powerful character that I loved reading about. That is what Brigid does best, lets you see the sides of a person that make you instantly love them.
Are Things
The one thing that has always captivated me about Brigid Kemmerer’s writing, aside from her talent for writing characters, has been her ability to create plots that are unique, believable, and full of twists and turns. What could have been a confusing read simply isn’t because of the way that Brigid has managed to write it. I found the plot of Spirit to be really interesting and captivating. I was hooked to the edge of my seat as I read it, and found myself totally engrossed in the story. Whereas the earlier books in this series have a lot of light humour within them that make them seem lighter, this book is a lot deeper and darker but I honestly think it works. There is still humour in places that help to bring it up again, but this is a book that dives into the emotional side of Hunter, detailing why he is the way he is as well as why he acts the way he does. Hunter learns so much about himself and those around him that it really makes you feel for him. I truly found this book to be one that was entertaining, thrilling and kept me coming back for more.
Happening Beyond
While Hunter had a main focus in this story, it is so clear that Brigid Kemmerer knows how to bring the personalities of each and every one of her characters to life in every book. I enjoyed reading about all of the Merrick brothers – and especially loved being able to see more of Michael in this book – but I also really liked reading about Kate. Kate was a character that I struggled to like at first. There was something about her that I couldn’t quite like but as the story went on, I soon found myself hoping things would work out. She had a shaded past but she was strong, humane, and just wanted to live life without all the pressure and drama. She took my heart away and she was also the perfect balance for Hunter. She opened him up and showed him how life could be if he learnt to just trust a little bit. I think she was an exceptional character in the story and I’m so glad that Brigid added her into the series.
Your Control
I’ve spoken quite a bit about Hunter above, but I just want to add in a few more words about him here. As I mentioned previously, I didn’t really think much about Hunter before this book. Even after reading Fearless, I didn’t feel much of anything for him but then I read this book. Hearing things from his perspective, seeing the pressures that he was dealing with and the thoughts that were continuing to go through him simply broke my heart. Within the first few chapters I was already feeling so sorry for him and wishing that I could just give him a hug and make things better. But he never let anything really get in his way. He was a strong character who had a lot of things to work through and found himself getting stronger as the book continued. He was stuck in the middle and had no idea which way to go and I just found him to be a captivating character and an absolutely fantastic protagonist.
You Must Learn
It is without a doubt that Brigid Kemmerer is an incredibly talented writer. She makes me want to give up writing because there is no way I could ever write characters as beautifully as she does. What amazes me the most isn’t just that she has characters down to a tee, it is that she writes men so powerfully. She doesn’t write stereotypical guys, these are boys who have character, they have their strengths but they also have their weaknesses and their flaws. They’re just a bunch of kids (sorry) who are struggling to learn who they are and who they’re meant to be and that is what makes this series so compelling. It is these strong characters that keep me coming back for more. Brigid Kemmerer keeps you entertained with a multi-level plot, incredibly strong characters, and a pile of relationship dynamics that have you begging for more. If ever there was a series that could entertain many people, The Elemental Series is definitely it.
Who To Trust
Just in case it is unclear right now, I absolutely loved Spirit. This is a story that grabs you by the shoulders and keeps you entertained right until the very end. While some fans may struggle with the change in tone in this book compared to the previous two, I found it to be absolutely perfect and necessary. Hunter’s story is one that should have been told as it gave the reader a clearer look at who he is and why he belongs where he is. If this story held the same light tone as the previous books then it wouldn’t have had the same impact on the readers. This is a powerful story that brings to light many different things but also pulls the overall plot of the series forward. From the end of this book, it is clear to see that the troubles the Merrick boys and Hunter Garrity face aren’t over but are really just beginning. It is because of this that I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in the series. Honestly, this is a powerful book that you should definitely give a try – especially if you’re already reading the series. If you’re not, it is possible to dive straight in with this book but I would definitely recommend reading the other books first just for some background knowledge. Spirit is a book that will fill your heart in ways you never expected.
** I received this copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. **
Brigid Kemmerer started writing in high school, and her first real “novel” was about four vampire brothers causing a ruckus in the suburbs. Those four brothers are the same boys living in the pages of The Elemental Series, so Brigid likes to say she’s had four teenage boys taking up space in her head for the last seventeen years!
Spirit, the latest book in the series, will be released in stores and online on May 28, 2013. Connect with Brigid on her website, Twitter, Facebook, and GoodReads.
