Behind The Blog #10 – Superstitious Minds

As today is Friday 13th, this week we are focussing on it as a topic. Friday the 13th is considered to be an unlucky day in many cultures, with several superstitions surrounding it. Do you believe that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day? What are some of the superstitions (if any,) you associate with Friday the 13th. In relation to books: What are some books you’ve read that deal with superstitions or Friday the 13th?

Right, I’m starting off this post by apologising for its short length. I haven’t had the best muse for the blog at the moment which I believe is due to the fact that I’m getting 2-4 hours of sleep a night due to working two jobs this week. But hopefully I’ll be getting back into things shortly. But yes, I didn’t have much time or inspiration for this post so I apologise for length and quality. Hope you enjoy anyway!

In my household, Friday 13th has always been a day full of jokes because my mother was actually born on the day so we usually tease her saying that it was just such an unlucky day. Therefore, growing up, the superstitions surrounding the day were never taken seriously in my house and this is just something that has continued to stick with me as I grew up. Generally Friday the 13th is just another day of the week that is full of whatever mundane tasks I have to fulfil that day.

As far as I am aware, I have no specific memories of bad things happening on any Friday the 13th, possible the odd things that go wrong but no more than any other day. To me, I just find it hard to be superstitious. I grew up with a black cat, but I don’t think that makes me a witch. I’ve walked over many bridges while the train passes and I never had a tragic accident. For me superstitions are just anxieties that have been passed on over the generations and have grown into nation-wide panics.

The only suspicion I can’t stand is walking under a ladder, but that’s due to my own anxiety of said ladder falling on me, and not because something bad will happen in my life.

So while we joke about Friday the 13th being unlucky, I find it difficult to believe it to be true simply because I’ve never noticed anything out of the ordinary. If unlucky things were to occur on this day, it’d probably just be coincidence rather than the superstitious holiday date. But maybe you disagree with me? If you do, what are your arguments for the superstition? I’d love to hear all your thoughts!
