Jackson Superhero might not be a real name, but it is a story about a real boy, and as the name suggests, Jackson is far from ordinary. By day, a rare disease limits his ability to move freely, but at night he is far from grounded. When the sleeping hours come around, and weightlessness takes over, Jackson takes to the skies. He knows what it means to need the support of others, which is why when he hears a call for help, he is quickly there to lend a hand.

My Thoughts

As soon as I heard about this book, I knew it was one that I wanted to get a good look at – and boy am I glad that I did! This is very cute little picture book about a little boy who isn’t able to move much throughout the day. But, do not fear for this book is full of an uplifting message as the boy is able to take flight – literally – during the night. He flies away when he hears the sound of an owl in distress. He goes past his friends far below until he finds the owl in trouble.

The book is full of lovely rhyme that I can tell would work well with children and is a story that can definitely be read over and over again. While the book itself doesn’t touch on the real Jackson and the reason he cannot move during the day, it does show that we can all have vivid and wonderful imaginations and we’re never truly strapped down and stuck in our situations! The little bit at the book explaining about Darren and his son, Jackson was also a really lovely added touch and dimension.

Last, but certainly not least, the illustrations are also really great! I love how they flow so well with the story and that they look like they’ve been coloured in. It really brought the story to life and were vibrant enough that I can see that the children would love them.

So, if you’re looking for a very cute rhyming book, make sure that you get your hands on this book and keep an eye on the series for more books to come!

About the Author

Darren Garwood is the father of Jackson, a real boy living with a rare and terminal illness called Krabbe disease. Darren came up with the Jackson Superhero series because as Jackson can’t move during the day, Darren wanted to help him dream at night, when he was free to be anything he wanted to be. Jackson Saves an owl is written in lively, fantastic rhyme, and is the first in the Jackson Superhero series.
