Q&A
What is your favourite thing about writing books?
I love when a story comes together and teaches me about life and I really like sharing those insights with readers. And best of all when I write something that makes people laugh.
Who is your favourite character in your book and why?
In this latest book I have to give that award to Phoebe the smelliest, laziest, most
lovable pooch who my main character adopts at Yappy Hour.
What is your favourite drink to consume while writing?
Green tea, or espresso. I know, kind of opposites. I do like contrasts. Green tea is more of a winter drink for me. And the espresso gives me that wonderful caffeine clarity in the summer.
Do you have any bad habits while you’re writing?
I get carried away and can’t stop so I need to have something to pull me back to the real world or I’ll be up all night.
How do you research your books?
I visit places when I can and I use the internet to refresh my recollection and fill in details. That sends me down all sorts of rabbit holes and leads to a much more detailed description and also to new places for exploring.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I’m a pantser. I write the parts that I know and have learned to trust that the rest will come to me eventually. Sometimes, that’s in the middle of the night and I have to write it down. I keep a pad on the night stand. When I’m in the shower and I have a revelation, I have to scramble because those ideas often don’t last so there I am muttering them aloud till I can dry off enough to find a pen and paper!
If you could live in any fictional world, which would you choose and why?
Wonderland. I love the whole idea of Alice in Wonderland. Alice has such terrific adventures and those characters she meets are memorable. They’ve lived with me forever.
If you could befriend any fictional character, who would you choose and why?
Definitely Alice in Wonderland. Oh, the places we’d go!
