Q&A

What is your favourite thing about writing books?
It’s probably getting to the end of the very first draft and seeing the end of the story. I love the feeling of knowing the people inside it. They feel very real to me.

Who is your favourite character in your book and why?
I love Geraldine. She is strong and caring. I love how she has normal mishaps like when she ladders her tights. I’d like her as a friend.

What is your favourite drink to consume while writing?
I’m a coffee addict when I’m writing. It’s the only drink that keeps me going.

Do you have any bad habits while you’re writing?
Apart from drinking too much coffee, I also eat too much chocolate and then wonder why I can’t get into my jeans!

How do you research books?
If it is medical knowledge I require I’m lucky that I know a lot of doctors and tap into their brains. And with police research I go out with the police and watch and learn. I ask lots of questions that begin with, What if…

Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I’m probably more of a plotter, but sometimes a situation or a character will take me in a direction that I didn’t see and then I’m a panster. Mostly I see the shape of the whole plot in my head as imagery before I get it down on paper.

If you could live in any fictional world, which would you choose and why?
It would probably be a musical world where everyone was singing and dancing. Where every dance movement was effortless and you could sing songs like all the great singers. l’d love to be able to sing and dance in this fictional world.

If you could befriend any fictional character, who would you choose and why?
I’d love to befriend Mary Poppins. She has so many cool tricks up her sleeves. I’d love to know how she clicks her fingers and tidies a room up so fast. I’ve tried it, but I can’t seem to get the click right!

About the book

Emily Jacobs, a nurse, is in hospital for a minor operation. When she wakes in the night, woozy with anaesthetic, she sees the doctor frantically trying to resuscitate the woman in the bed next to her. In the morning, she is told that she must have had a nightmare. The bed has been empty all along . . .

When Emily returns to work she discovers a bracelet that she believes belonged to the missing woman. Soon, she becomes convinced that her colleagues at the hospital are hiding a terrible secret.
What if she’s wrong? What if her own troubled past has affected her more than she knows?

But what if she’s right?

What else could they be capable of?
