Thursday’s Special Spotlight; Boys Don’t Cry

Special Spotlight

Thursday’s Special Spotlight is a new feature here at A Daydreamer’s Thoughts. It is inspired by her library’s “Book of the Week” and Stepping out of the Page’s From the Review Pile. It also stems from how far behind I am on writing reviews and how guilty I often feel about it!

The idea of this feature is to spotlight books that I read e-ons ago that I absolutely loved and I feel deserve the spotlight on this blog! They will be accompanied with reasons as to why I loved them and why I think you should read them.

This weeks spotlight is Boys Don’t Cry by Malorie Blackman

boys don't cry

I read this book way back in July last year after going to the Blogger Brunch at Random House and being introduced to the series. I hadn’t even heard of the book before then and while just knowing it was a Malorie Blackman book should have been enough, it was the synopsis of the book that finally pulled me in and made me want to read it. When I was finished, I was so glad that I took the time to read it and have been anticipating the release of Boys Don’t Cry 2 ever since – but it still isn’t coming out for a while! This was one of those books that shows just how talented Malorie Blackman is with perfect characterisations, and emotions that hit you right in the heart due to how realistic it all feels. I could truly envision this happening to someone in the world today.

This book tells the tale of a young man who is about to have his dream answered by getting into univeristy, when his ex turns up on his doorstep and lumps him with his child – the one he had no idea even existed. I loved the premise of this book, but I also loved the journey that our main character goes on. He doesn’t want to accept this child as his own, isn’t ready to be a father and it shows so completely. There were times when I was gritting my teeth wanting to yell at him to stop being so naive. But, then there was his brother who actually made the book for me. I won’t spoil anything but it’s not outlined in the synopsis but his brother brings this story to life in such a powerful and magical way. If I didn’t already love everything that Malorie Blackman writes, then this book would have made me do so.

Why Should You Read Boys Don’t Cry
Without simply saying; because it’s a book not to miss, I would argue that you should read this book because it is so full of amazing moments that you really shouldn’t let pass you by. It makes you question so many things and really leaves you feeling happier and more warm after reading it. Malorie has written yet another gold-mine of a book and if this story doesn’t touch your heart, I’d be surprised. I had to control myself in the public setting I was in when I read one twist in this book that pulled my heart right out of its socket. If you want a book that is powerful, invigorating, and full of perfect attention to detail, then you should read Boys Don’t Cry – especially if you’ve read and loved Wonder.
