N.E.W.Ts Magical Read-a-Thon; My TBR
N.E.W.Ts Magical Read-a-Thon; My TBR
Hello All!
I’m here today to tell you all about the amazing readathon that I discovered a few days ago, N.E.W.T.s Magical Read-a-thon! So it all started in April with the O.W.Ls read-a-thon and is continuing this month with the N.E.W.Ts. For those of you unaware, the OWLs and NEWTs are the names of the exams that the characters in Harry Potter sit in their fifth year and seventh year at Hogwarts.
So, I was definitely intrigued when I found about this as I love Harry Potter and I love a good challenge!
Now you’re supposed to sit the OWLs first and then the NEWTs but as I have only just found out about the NEWTs, I’m planning to do things a little differently. This month I plan to sit my NEWTs and then next month, I will work on my OWLs. Beggars can’t be choosers!
But what even is the N.E.W.T.s Magical Read-a-thon?
You can find the introduction video over on Book Roast’s Youtube channel, or click here.
After watching the video, there are some further instructions and guides in the description part of the video. This also has a career guide pack whereby you can, if you wish to, choose a career to work towards.
This, for me, was the most exciting part of the whole challenge. It does seem to be confusing some people but I find the objectives on each of the pages of the guide are actually really helpful. You find out what NEWTs you need for the career (i.e. Two O’s, 1 E and 1 A in certain subjects) and then find the prompts in the N.E.W.Ts letter and prompts document. List the propmts in one place and then choose which books you’ll read for each subject and level. (Check out mine below for more information!)
Magizoologist
I have decided that I want to aim to become a Magizoologist.

Now this means I need an:
O in Care of Magical Creatures
E in Charms
E in Herbology
To receive an A in a subject, you need to read one book. To receive an E you need to read two books. To receive an O you need to read 3 books.
Thus, I will need to read seven books to become a Magizoologist by the end of August.
Subjects and Prompts
Care of Magical Creatures
A: Follow the spiders! Why couldn’t it be follow the butterflies!
Book title that starts with a letter A, for Aragog!
E: Book under 300 pages
0: Grab onto Fawke’s tail! Read a book with a bird on the cover
Charms
A: Read a book that you think has a gorgeous cover
E: Read a comic/graphic novel/manga (or book under 150 pages)
Optional O: Spongify (softening charm) – read a paperback book
Herbology
A: Mandrake! Quick, put your headphones on! Listen to an audiobook (if not – green cover)
E: Read a book between 350-390 pages
Optional 0: Read a book with a flower on the cover
The TBR
So those are my prompts, here are the books I am planning to read. These have already changed so I expect them to change a few more times over the month!
Prompt: Follow the spiders! Why couldn’t it be follow the butterflies!
Book title that starts with a letter A, for Aragog!
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green
I have been meaning to read this book for a very long time so now that both the Hardback and the Paperback have been released, it is time to give it a read!
—
Prompt: Book under 300 pages
Summer of No Regrets by Kate Mallinder
I’ve had this one on my shelf for a while and since the summer is almost over, I think now is the perfect time to give it a read!
—
Prompt: Grab onto Fawke’s tail! Read a book with a bird on the cover
Infinity Son by Adam Silvera
So I feel I might be cheating a little with this prompt as the bird isn’t shaped like a normal bird but I am making it work because I am desperate to read this book!
—
Prompt: Read a book that you think has a gorgeous cover
Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman
Having read and loved Summer Bird Blue it is time to finally get this book read. I also met Akemi at YALC and it was just so lovely so I definitely want to read this book.
—
Prompt: Read a comic/graphic novel/manga (or book under 150 pages)
Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu
I have had this book recommended to me a fair few times now so it seems like the perfect opportunity to give it a read.
—
Prompt: Mandrake! Quick, put your headphones on! Listen to an audiobook (if not – green cover)
City of Ghosts by V. E. Schwab
This is technically a re-read but a re-read in a different format. Which is allowed, I checked! A friend and I are going to Edinburgh for the Book Festival and we have a long drive so we’ve decided to get us into the mood, we’d re-read this book on the way!
—
Prompt: Read a book between 350-390 pages
The Time of Our Lives by Abby Williams
This is actually a book I need to read for a blog tour but it comes in at a nice 377 pages so perfect for this challenge!
I haven’t yet decided on the optional books yet as I’m not sure I’ll get around to them!

I love this challenge so much, but I went on holiday a few days before it started and only just got back so I still haven’t worked out my TBR haha. I’ve been reading though so I need to go back and work out where I can slot them in and what else I can finish by the end of the month. I liked City of Ghosts, hope you love it just as much on your re-read, and good luck with both the NEWTs and the OWLs!
